Gaviscon Advance UK Ingredients Explained

Gaviscon Advance UK Ingredients Explained

The Gaviscon Advance UK ingredients list starts with two active ingredients: sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate. Every 10 mL of the UK liquid contains 1,000 mg of sodium alginate and 200 mg of potassium bicarbonate, according to the official UK product information.

At British Pharmacare, we want you to know exactly which formulation you’re ordering. That means checking more than the Gaviscon name. Below, we explain how the ingredients work and which label details US shoppers should check before choosing a product.

Gaviscon Advance Active Ingredients

Both UK peppermint and aniseed liquids contain the same two active ingredients at the same concentrations. You may see potassium bicarbonate called “potassium hydrogen carbonate” on the packaging. These are two names for the same compound. The manufacturer’s liquid formulation details confirm the following strengths.

Sodium alginate

500 mg

1,000 mg

Potassium bicarbonate

100 mg

200 mg

A label showing 500 mg of sodium alginate per 5 mL isn’t describing a weaker liquid than one showing 1,000 mg per 10 mL. The concentration is identical. When comparing bottles, we suggest checking the volume beside the ingredient amount before drawing conclusions about strength.

How These Ingredients Help With Reflux

Sodium alginate forms a gel when it encounters stomach acid. Potassium bicarbonate reacts with acid to release carbon dioxide, which becomes trapped within that gel and helps it float. This raft-forming mechanism creates a barrier above the stomach contents, helping reduce their movement back into the esophagus, or food pipe.

That’s why the Gaviscon Advance formulation is described as a reflux suppressant rather than simply an acid-neutralizing treatment. Its UK prescribing information describes a physical action that can impede reflux for up to four hours. “Up to four hours” shouldn’t be read as a promise of protection throughout an entire night.

Inactive Ingredients in the UK Liquid

The peppermint liquid’s patient leaflet lists these additional ingredients, also called excipients: calcium carbonate, carbomer, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), sodium saccharin, sodium hydroxide, peppermint flavoring and purified water. The leaflet also states that the product contains no sugar or gluten. Sugar-free doesn’t mean sweetener-free, though: sodium saccharin remains part of the formula.

Don’t skip this part of the label when checking suitability. E218 and E216 can cause allergic reactions, including delayed reactions. Someone who’s previously reacted to either ingredient should check with a pharmacist rather than choosing the product solely because its active ingredients look suitable.

Peppermint and Aniseed Aren’t Identical

The aniseed liquid uses aniseed flavoring derived from fennel instead of peppermint flavoring. Its official patient leaflet also identifies benzyl alcohol within that flavoring, at 0.525 mg per 5 mL. Benzyl alcohol can cause allergic reactions, so switching flavors means checking the ingredient list again, not just choosing a different taste.

The aniseed leaflet specifically advises asking a doctor or pharmacist about this ingredient during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It also advises checking before use if you have liver or kidney disease. These warnings don’t mean everyone must avoid the aniseed liquid, but they shouldn’t be overlooked.

Sodium Content Isn’t the Same as Sodium Alginate Strength

A 10 mL dose containing 1,000 mg of sodium alginate does not contain 1,000 mg of sodium. Sodium alginate is a compound, and its total weight isn’t the same as its sodium contribution. The UK liquid’s mineral warnings give the following totals.

Mineral

Per 5 mL

Per 10 mL

Sodium

57.85 mg

115.7 mg

Potassium

39.06 mg

78.12 mg

For a practical example, four 10 mL doses provide 462.8 mg of sodium. That’s approximately 20% of the FDA’s 2,300 mg Daily Value for sodium, before counting food or other medicines. The percentage printed in the UK leaflet uses a different reference intake, which explains why it may not match a US calculation.

Ask a clinician about suitability if you have kidney disease or follow a sodium- or potassium-restricted diet. There’s another ingredient to account for: each 10 mL contains 200 mg of calcium carbonate, despite its placement among the excipients. The product’s calcium precautions apply to people with high blood calcium or certain calcium-related kidney conditions, including recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones.

Chewable Tablets Have a Different Ingredient List

UK Gaviscon Advance mint chewable tablets contain 500 mg of sodium alginate and 100 mg of potassium bicarbonate per tablet. Two tablets therefore provide the same amounts of those active ingredients as 10 mL of liquid. That doesn’t make the complete formulations identical, and each format has its own directions. The manufacturer links its mint tablet patient leaflet from the tablet product page.

The tablets contain aspartame, at 4.5 mg per tablet, while the liquid ingredient lists discussed above don’t list it. Aspartame is a source of phenylalanine and may be harmful to people with phenylketonuria, or PKU. For someone with PKU who’s considering tablets instead of liquid, this is a reason to speak with their clinician before switching.

How Gaviscon Advance UK Ingredients Differ From US Products

US Gaviscon Regular Strength and Extra Strength liquids list aluminum hydroxide and magnesium carbonate as their active antacid ingredients. Their official US labeling on DailyMed also lists sodium alginate, but under inactive ingredients without specifying its quantity. It would be incorrect to say these US liquids contain no alginate.

However, that ingredient’s presence doesn’t establish the UK Advance concentration or make the products interchangeable. We recommend comparing the exact product name and its ingredient panel, rather than assuming “Extra Strength” means the same formula as “Advance.” Our UK and US Gaviscon comparison explains the distinction further.

Using the UK Formula Safely

For adults and children aged 12 and older, the manufacturer’s UK liquid directions specify 5–10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily. Children under 12 should receive it only on medical advice. Shake the bottle before measuring. Use a medicine-measuring device rather than a kitchen spoon, which the NHS warns won’t measure the dose accurately.

The UK leaflet advises leaving at least two hours between Gaviscon Advance and certain other oral medicines. Ask your pharmacist to check your medication schedule, and follow any longer interval required by another medicine’s instructions. The liquid shouldn’t be refrigerated. Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen or haven’t improved after seven days; don’t wait that long if you develop difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss.
